With reference to your letter of the 21st February last, I am directed by the Secretary of State

for War to inform you that it appears from the Accounts received from Hong Kong that the Colony has paid an excessive amount on account of the contributions for the

Year 1890.

The contribution as fixed for the

year was £40,000 but, the sums actually brought to the credit of the British Ex- chequer amounted to £42566.19.8 as shown

in the margin.

Mr Secretary Stanhope proposes to take

the difference of £2566.19.8 as a payment on account for the year 1891, and would suggest that the Colony be informed accordingly.
